In Liverpool last Friday; as a native Mancunian it’s a morally dubious proposition to head west like that, but it is a great place. Sadly declined in a rather obvious way but full of fascinating architecture and culture. Also the Magritte exhibition at the Tate is excellent; combined with the Walker gallery its a city bursting with good art.

  1. The Lady Lever in Port Sunlight is also a really interesting gallery, as much for the circumstances of its foundation as what lies within.

Liverpool – home to more Grade 1 listed buildings than any English city outside London. A little known fact! The best way to approach it is by night from the Birkenhead ferry (there’s a fascinating little pub near the river on the Wirral side, I seem to remember…)

    • Yes! I am (perhaps strangely) a lot more familiar with the Wirral. I’ve been to New Brighton and Port Sunlight many times, but that probably reflects my dad’s preference for day trips by car to places where there aren’t many people…
