Politics place-holder

A new academic year and a new house and neighbourhood have been keeping me busy, so please forgive (or enjoy) my current infrequence of posting.

In the last couple of weeks there have been several potentially interesting political shifts, albeit none seismic: the election of Ed Miliband as leader of the Labour Party, his selection of empty vessel Alan Johnson as shadow chancellor, the unveiling by the Conservative government of some more detailed aspects of the cuts, and the results of the Browne and Green reports (who surely were always intended to preach to the choir).* However, the political landscape in the UK will be concretely set by the forthcoming comprehensive spending review and particularly the opposition reaction. I am expecting to be appalled by all three main parties, but its still slowly being digested, for now.

*Also intriguing was the departure of Rahm Emanuel, who I have always found particularly repellent, from the White House
